Remember to to work as an open water lifeguard you will need to be physically fit, highly observant and have good communication skills to interact with a range of customers and your colleagues.


The answers to the most frequently asked questions are below:

What do I need to be able to do to enrol on an Open Water Lifeguard course?

You must be 16 years of age, or above, and be able to swim at least 400m in a pool, or in open water using a front stroke and showing urgency. You will need to be able to get yourself out of the water without assistance and be able to dive to 2 meters depth.

What dates are the courses being held?

We have courses scheduled throughout 2018, in March, April, June and September. If you are currently a student and want to train for a summer role, we are running courses in the Easter holidays.


Dates are scheduled as follows, but if there is a greater demand we may add additional courses.

How do I book a course?

Please go to:, where you will be able to book and pay for your course. You will then be sent full joining instructions for the course and a form to complete and return in advance of the course.You must complete the booking process a minimum of 5 working days prior to the course start date.

Do you provide the equipment needed?

Yes, the Aquapark Rutland can provide you with a wetsuit and all the equipment you need to train.

Can you provide accommodation?

You can camp at Rutland Water. Please contact Rutland Watersports, on 01780 460154. If you advise them you will be training at Aquapark Rutland, they will be able to give you more information on camping and restrictions.

What if I am unable to attend the course I have booked?

If you can supply us with a medical note to demonstrate that you were not physically fit enough, due to unforeseen illness or injury, to undertake the training on the specified date, then we will rebook you on the next available course. Otherwise your booking is final and there are no refunds.
